Don Tapscott, co-author of Wikinomics: how mass collaboration changes all.
According to Tapscott Wikinomics is based on four ideas: opening, equality, sharing and world-wide action. The use of massive collaborations for enterprises, in recent history, can be considered as another step in enterprises' tendency to outsourcing: to externalize towards outern productive entities several functions that were done before in the enterprise's inner structure. The news is that instead of one operative group enterprisily organized in order to perform one determined function, mass collaboration uses individual and free agents, gathering (often virtually) together to cohoperate in order to improve a certain operation or to resolve a problem.
To remark this difference, this kind of outsourcing is also called crowdsourcing. These exterior activities can be motivated by some kind of reward, but this is not necessarily granted.
